ON THE SCENE: TCCT’s Exciting Program Geared Towards Off-Stage Theatre Skills
Traverse City Children's Theatre (TCCT) is thrilled about its latest program that goes beyond the stage and looks at the great stuff that goes on in the control booth, costume room and workshop. Our new program is called ‘On the Scene’ and delves into Set Design, Costuming, Lighting, Choreography, Directing and lots of other cool stuff that goes on before and during a performance. The goal? To mount a show every spring on the main stage that is entirely student produced! It will have a student director, a student stage manager, as well as student light technicians, prop master, costume designer and set designer.
How will the program work?
To be involved in an ‘On the Scene’ show students will have to complete one or more levels of training in our ‘On the Scene’ program. The number of levels to be completed goes according to the age of the student; 9 to 11 year olds must complete level one. 12 to 15 year olds must complete levels one and two. Students 16 and up must complete all 3 levels. Equivalent training from other institutions will be accepted. Because of the training given during rehearsals, students who were involved in our 2007 productions of Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio will be considered to have completed level 1. Summer Performing Arts Camp students, regardless of when they attended, will also be considered to have completed level 1.
What if a student only wants to act?
From sewing on a button to helping paint the set, all students will be required to have the appropriate training for their age and do more than only acting.
Do students automatically get in the ‘On the Scene’ show when these classes are taken?
No. Students will still need to audition for a part or apply for one of the directorships. Upon entry, additional tuition fees will apply.
